Code for Blue

Our Goal:
To equip teachers and students aged 12–17 in 10% of schools in each voivodeship with the knowledge and tools necessary to identify water resource issues and implement effective solutions in their local environment.

Code For Blue is an action-oriented water education program that enables teachers to engage students in local environmental initiatives, including the protection of rivers and water resources.

For whom is the Code for Blue program?

The program is intended for educational institutions and teachers of students in grades 6–8 of primary schools and grades 1–3 of high schools and technical schools across Poland. It has been adapted to the national curriculum and can be implemented by teachers of various subjects. 

The program brings practical environmental education into schools, helping young people create solutions for real, local problems.

Our goal is to empower young people to influence the world around them by developing their ability to make changes and solve problems.

The program teaches in an engaging way... how to teach! Trained teachers will be able to pass on the competencies and tools they have acquired to their students. Teachers participating in the program will guide students through the entire process of practical learning – from identifying local problems and needs, through environmental analysis, designing solutions, seeking funding, to their implementation.

Story-based education – Ewa Ewart's film "To the Last Drop"

Code for Blue is based on story-based education, drawing on Ewa Ewart's film "To the Last Drop." The program fosters empathy, utilizes place-based education, and teaches solution design through design thinking, project work, and technology such as computers, microscopes, measurement sensors, robotics, and programming.
All of this is taught by sharing know-how on how to protect water – an essential element for all of us to live.
Students will gain skills that are crucial for the job market and functioning in a changing world influenced by environmental changes. The goal of the project is to raise ecological awareness and student engagement in environmental protection, as well as to build competencies such as agency, entrepreneurship, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and responsibility for themselves and their surroundings.

How to apply?

Program właśnie wchodzi w etap skalowania – od 2025 roku jego zasięg systematycznie się poszerza, a w nadchodzącym roku szkolnym 2025/2026 będzie realizowany w województwach podlaskimi małopolskim. Rozwój w regionie północno-wschodnim możliwy jest dzięki wsparciu Narodowego Instytutu Wolności – Centrum Rozwoju Społeczeństwa Obywatelskiego w ramach Rządowego Programu Fundusz Inicjatyw Obywatelskich NOWEFIO 2021–2030, a w regionie małopolskim – dzięki partnerowi strategicznemu, firmie CANPACK.

Wcześniej program przeszedł fazę testową, podczas której nauczyciele dzielili się swoimi opiniami. Nabór do pilotażu zakończył się w czerwcu 2024 roku, a jego realizacja rozpoczęła się we wrześniu, w wybranych szkołach. Pilotaż trwał do kwietnia 2025 roku i na jego podstawie zapadła decyzja o rozszerzeniu działań.

Obecnie trwa etap wdrażania w wybranych regionach, natomiast kolejne możliwości dołączenia będą ogłaszane wraz z rozszerzaniem programu na następne województwa.

Skalowanie programu

W roku szkolnym 2025/2026 program będzie realizowany w województwach podlaskim i małopolskim.

Czerwiec 2025 -

Pilot phase

Establishing cooperation with new schools, conducting workshops that will develop the skills of students and teachers, and implementing the program's assumptions.

Wrzesień 2024 - Kwiecień 2025

Pre-pilot phase

 

Implementation of recommendations resulting from the testing phase, conducting final tests, and preparing detailed schedules and documentation.

July - August 2024

Testing phase

The implementation of the program in selected schools, gathering feedback from participants, and making modifications to better adapt it to educational needs.

March - June 2024

An innovative Android tool for monitoring the moisture of indoor plants. It uses moisture sensors that send data about the soil's condition directly to the user's smartphone. It allows for precise adjustment of watering amounts, supporting the health and condition of the plants. The user-friendly interface makes plant care easy and efficient.

Solar Bench
This is the first Code for Green project at the SSP in Kaczanów – it is located outside the school and provides 24/7 access to USB charging ports powered by solar energy (solar panel). The students designed, raised funds, and built the bench, demonstrating to the local community the benefits of renewable energy sources and promoting conscious use of energy resources.

The air quality measurement station designed by students from ZSP in Września monitors the concentration of suspended particulate matter around the school and preschool. Designed and 3D-printed, it is equipped with a clear display that allows the community to track air quality in real-time.
Prototype of a fence powering the garden

Retention Fence Prototype
The prototype of a water-retaining fence, designed for a school garden, was created by students from the Municipal Primary School in Kaczanów. Its function is to collect rainwater without taking up additional space. Fences covered with vegetation can directly irrigate plants, while the soil moisture monitoring system regulates the irrigation process, preventing excessive water usage.

The interactive beehive is an educational tool for schools, using panels to showcase the importance of pollinators for biodiversity. Equipped with a location-based app, it was developed at High School No. 8 in Poznań using IT and graphic tools, in collaboration with a student with Down syndrome from the King David Christian School.

The handbook is a practical tool that supports teachers in integrating climate education into schools. Through the method of experiential learning, it develops a sense of agency in children and young people, motivating them to take action for the environment. It inspires students to take independent action in shaping a positive future.

LichenGO is an app developed by ZS in Polkowice that allows users to monitor air pollution using lichens. Users report the presence of lichens, helping to assess the environmental condition in their area. The app enables data collection and analysis using advanced tools, such as thermal cameras. LichenGO promotes learning through hands-on field experiences, fostering empathy and responsibility toward the environment. With an open map, every user can contribute to building the database.

Smart Home Prototype
The hexagonal house prototype, awarded by SAP, is an intelligent building with appropriate glazing that rotates toward the sun. It uses renewable energy technology to efficiently recover energy. The project, still being developed by students of the Technical School Complex in Września, also includes a system for transmitting signals using laser beams and infrared.

We are building an e-learning platform https://cfg.e-learning.pl, which offers: access to training that enables comprehensive development in the areas of environmental protection and sustainable development, a wealth of educational resources in the form of interactive modules, the opportunity to exchange experiences through chats and discussion forums, participation in practical online workshops, tracking the latest information, and supporting the development of climate and environmental educators.
Summer camps in Suwałki region

Summer Camps for Children
We have completed three editions of the summer camps at Lake Szelment, during which a total of 140 children participated in sports and environmental activities. The Foundation's project brought together participants from Poland and Ukraine, fostering their collaboration skills. The children explored the life of the lake using the mobile laboratory "MobiLab," learning about biodiversity. The summer camps provided an opportunity for learning, building bonds, and promoting intercultural integration, which was a key element of this year's edition.

Port Suwałki and Port Polkowice
„Port Suwałki” and „Port Polkowice” were mobile educational workshops for children from Ukraine who were still enrolled in the Ukrainian education system. Created by the Code for Green Foundation, they provided a safe space for learning, peer integration, and educational support. As part of the "Support for Refugee Children from Ukraine in Poland" project, summer camps, training, and integration activities were conducted, reaching over 600 participants. Both "Ports" operated for 8 hours a day, offering support to children aged 7-18.

MobiLab is a mobile workshop laboratory that combines new technologies with field activities and data analysis under the guidance of experts. As part of the Code For Green® program, MobiLab enables students and teachers to implement the curriculum in the areas of air quality, biodiversity, and water conservation. Participants learn through experience, using modern tools such as thermal cameras and tablets. Field activities engage students, fostering their critical thinking and empathy towards the natural environment.

Polkowice Climate Dialogue
The Polkowice Climate Dialogue was an event held at Primary School No. 4 in Polkowice, gathering around 250 participants, including youth, entrepreneurs, NGOs, seniors, and local authorities. The meeting aimed to facilitate a joint discussion on climate change, its impacts, and local action opportunities. As part of the initiative, thematic stations were set up, featuring presentations of research, Norwegian experiences, and proposals for climate projects. The conclusions from the event were intended to influence the climate policy of the Polkowice municipality.

MobiLab - 36 schools (primary and high schools), 698 students participated in the activities, 57 teachers, 95 workshop hours, 21 localities, 2060 km of traveled route. Living Lab - 900 students in the project, 30 teachers, 5800 hours of classes, 150 hours of field activities in national parks, 240 hours at UAM and Wrocław University of Technology. Summer Camps - 140 children in three editions of summer camps. 600 participants in the project for students from Poland and Ukraine.
Interactive Trash Bin "Śmieciuś"

Little Garbage Can
The "Śmieciuś" (Little Garbage Can) is an interactive project created by students of the IT technical high school in Września as part of the School Living Lab program. Its purpose is to teach waste segregation to the youngest children. Images of waste are displayed on the bin's screen, and after clicking, the appropriate color of the bin lights up, indicating correct segregation. In the future, "Śmieciuś" will communicate vocally with the user - it may therefore become an even more engaging educational tool.
